WHAT IS IT? A documentary that will recount a journey by foot, from the Tyrrhenian to the Ionian sea: the discovery of Basilicata through the eyes of those who see it for the first time and the words of those who live there. It will be told in eight stages- about hatred and love, stirring the astonishment of those who will walk along inhabitants who are no longer surprised by anything, even if in love with the land to which they dedicate their lives, never subdued.. Love and hate, feelings that coexist in many people of the region, the torment justified by the fact of having a land prosperous and generous, but often poorly managed and sometimes "forgotten by God".. A story enriched by testimonials of acceptance (hospitality), warmth, reality and beauty.. The message will be positive and the walking will be a metaphor of sacrifice that leads to concrete results and a symbol of redemption from the bottom.
HOW WILL THE STORY BE TOLD? A group of walkers will make the journey by foot, followed by the cameras that will interview the protagonists of the crossing, which for the first time visit Basilicata. In the various stages, they will touch the beauty of nature and the scarred lands, tourist attractions and unexplored sites, symbols of struggle and history of Lucania and anonymous places, which will be narrated by prominent people who live there. The mission of these people will be trying to explain to the travelers the lands that they are going to pass through, telling anecdotes, historical facts and legends that characterize those places.. Bringing out the feelings of love and hate, resentment and desire for revenge, obstinacy and acceptance. The walkers will give a different interpretation of all this, a fresh, unconventional vision compared to the ones who are used to the state of things.
WHO ARE THE KEY PLAYERS? The narrator will introduce two major works: the autobiographical novel by Carlo Levi and a documentary by Michele Gandin, entitled "Christ Stopped at Eboli." The question in the title of this story and the parallelism between the two pieces of work is the thin thread between the testimonies of children who discover ,during the walk, for the first time those places and those who live every day the land and knows its vices and virtues, limits and potential, beauty and negativities. The documentary will be a moment of reflection, celebration, charming, (Yes, you will be charmed by Basilciata!) and if Christ Stopped at Eboli, it means that he was proceeding from Palestine.

Partiamo dal titolo del documentario. Ce lo spieghi?
Il titolo definitivo non sarà quello che ho usato per il crowdfunding, che serve a spiegare un po’ quello che vorremo fare. Partiremo con questo viaggio per scoprire se la tesi di Levi è ancora attuale oppure no, per cui quella sarà la domanda attorno alla quale girerà tutto il percorso. Vogliamo raccontare la Basilicata tra passato e modernità , incontreremo persone che ci parleranno di come si viveva nello scorso secolo e delle tradizioni culturali dei vari luoghi che toccheremo, ma anche visionari che non sono descrivibili con lo stereotipo leviano, gente che ha una marcia in più e che fa cose interessantissime per fare in modo che il territorio non sia più dimenticato da Dio, ma che anzi possa avere nuove frontiere di sviluppo. La metafora della camminata è molto forte, sacrificio, senso di collettività e raggiungimento di un traguardo passo dopo passo, credo possa essere il modo perfetto per raccontare i lucani e la lucania dopo Levi e Papaleo. Al percorso di Basilicata coast to coast, infatti, si sono ispirati i ragazzi di Vox Populi Grassano che hanno organizzato la traversata, sarà una bellissima avventura umana prima che filmica.
Come e da cosa nasce l’idea?
L’idea nasce con gli amici di Vox Populi Grassano che hanno organizzato la camminata ed avevano l’idea di farne un racconto audiovisivo grazie al giovane regista Gerardo Schiavone, che è l’altra figura centrale per la realizzazione del documentario. Io mi sto occupando della parte autorale, dare un senso artistico ed un filo conduttore, per fare in modo che non sia il semplice racconto di una camminata, ma che possa ambire ad un pubblico nazionale, usando gli artifizi narrativi che ho elencato prima. C’è un’altra opera che mi ha ispirato: si chiama Cristo non si è fermato ad Eboli ed è un documentario anni ’50 che racconta l’alfabetizzazione a Savoia di Lucania, è un opera fantastica e dimostra come già nello scorso secolo ci fosse la volontà di superare lo stereotipo raccontato da Levi. In realtà non sappiamo quale sarà la risposta, è un lavoro di ricerca vero e proprio quello che faremo.
Quali sono le otto tappe del progetto?
In realtà c’è qualche tappa in più, anche se scoprendo le storie dei nostri luoghi, mi verrebbe voglia di farne molte altre: partiremo da Maratea, forse la prima realtà lucana in cui è arrivato Cristo, poi andremo a Trecchina e Lauria, il giorno dopo ci sposteremo a Castelsaraceno, poi a San Chirico Raparo ed a Castronuovo di Sant’Andrea; da lì ad Aliano, poi passeremo per Craco e Tursi, per terminare la camminata a Scanzano. La festa finale sarà a Grassano il 7 agosto, sarà un bel percorso e non mancheranno sorprese.
Da chi è composto il gruppo di camminatori e come sono stati scelti?
Il gruppo di camminatori è stato messo insieme dai ragazzi di Grassano, giovani che hanno a cuore la loro terra e che fanno di tutto per difenderla, renderla un luogo migliore e farla conoscere agli altri. Per questo verranno con alcuni amici dell’università , da ogni angolo di Italia, per fare questo percorso di scoperta, sono un gruppo fantastico che ci riserverà molti spunti narrativi, ne sono certo.
Perché investire in questo progetto? Quanto tempo hanno a disposizione i contribuenti?
Credo che a questa domanda ci siano molteplici risposte, da un semplice atto di mecenatismo 2.0, all'amore per la propria terra e la curiosità di vederla raccontata anche con il proprio contributo; dalla voglia di chi non vive più qui di sapere come vanno le cose, all'interesse di un'impresa o associazione a patrocinare un progetto filmico ed a emergere nella narrazione. Ci sono varie modalità di co-finanziamento, da 1 euro ad oltre 1000, ricevendo in cambio ricompense diverse, ed il crowdfunding termina il 9 agosto. Chiunque voglia contribuire e supportare l’iniziativa è benvenuto, un po’ ciascuno non pesa a nessuno!
